Psychological Flexibility
What Is ACT Therapy?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT, pronounced "act") is an evidence-based approach that shifts the goal of therapy from eliminating difficult thoughts and feelings to building the capacity to have them without being controlled by them. Instead of trying to think your way out of anxiety, self-doubt, or fear, ACT helps you develop a different relationship with your inner experience — one defined by openness, flexibility, and values-driven action.
ACT is built on six core processes: present-moment awareness, cognitive defusion (unhooking from unhelpful thoughts), acceptance (making room for difficult feelings), self-as-context (connecting with a stable sense of self beyond your thoughts), values clarification, and committed action. Together, these build what's called psychological flexibility — the ability to be fully present, hold difficult experiences with openness, and continue moving toward what matters to you.
What makes ACT particularly powerful is its pragmatic approach to suffering. It doesn't pathologize your emotions or treat anxiety as a disorder to be eliminated. Instead, it recognizes that pain is a natural part of being human — and that suffering intensifies when we try to avoid, control, or suppress that pain. The question isn't "how do I stop feeling this?" but "how do I live a meaningful life even with this?"
At Soulstice Miami, we integrate ACT with EMDR and somatic approaches for a comprehensive treatment. While ACT builds present-moment flexibility and values-based living, EMDR addresses the past experiences that feed your patterns. Together, they create change from multiple directions.
Who It Helps
ACT Is Especially Helpful When You're
Stuck in overthinking, analysis paralysis, or chronic indecision
Avoiding situations because of anxiety, fear, or self-doubt
Feeling disconnected from what actually matters to you
Trying to control or suppress difficult emotions rather than processing them
Living on autopilot and wanting to feel more present and intentional
Struggling with perfectionism, people-pleasing, or fear of failure
You don't have to wait until the anxiety is gone to start living the life you want. ACT teaches you to move toward your values even with discomfort along for the ride.
In Practice
What ACT Looks Like in Session
ACT sessions at Soulstice Miami are active and experiential. We don't just talk about values — we identify them concretely and build them into your week. We practice defusion exercises that help you notice thoughts without believing them. We explore what you've been avoiding and why. We experiment with acceptance — making room for discomfort instead of running from it.
This isn't about positive thinking or mindfulness as a band-aid. It's about fundamentally changing your relationship with your inner experience so that your life is guided by choice and values, not fear and avoidance. It's the difference between surviving and actually living.
Your life is happening right now — not after the anxiety goes away. ACT therapy can help you start living it on your terms. Reach out for a free consultation.
