What is EMDR — and how does it actually work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help your brain heal from trauma and emotional wounds that didn’t fully process at the time they happened.
When we go through something overwhelming, especially as children or during moments when we felt unsafe or helpless, our brain and body sometimes hold onto those experiences in a raw, unprocessed form. Instead of storing the memory like a typical story with a beginning, middle, and end, it gets stuck — like it’s frozen in time.
This is why you might still feel anxious, shut down, or reactive when something reminds you (even unconsciously) of a past experience — your brain hasn’t had a chance to file that memory away properly.
What does EMDR do, neurologically?
Your brain has two sides (hemispheres), and they’re designed to work together to help you process and store experiences. EMDR uses gentle bilateral stimulation — like guided eye movements, tapping, or sound — to help both sides of your brain communicate and “unstick” those frozen memories.
Think of it like this:
When trauma happens, the memory gets jammed in the emotional part of the brain (the amygdala), and the logical part (your prefrontal cortex) can’t access it clearly. That’s why you know you’re safe, but your body still reacts like you’re in danger.
EMDR helps bridge that gap, so your brain can finally say:
“That was then — and this is now.”Over time, EMDR helps the nervous system calm down, so your body and mind can finally breathe again.
Why EMDR instead of just talk therapy?
Sometimes talking helps — and sometimes, talking around the problem doesn’t quite get to the root. EMDR is different because it doesn’t just focus on insight or logic. It helps shift the felt experience — the stuff that lives in your body, in your reflexes, in the reactions you can’t always control.
You don’t have to rehash every detail of what happened to heal.
You just need a space to process what your brain and body are still holding onto. What does an EMDR session actually look like?
We’ll begin by identifying what you’re carrying — whether it’s memories, emotions, or patterns that feel stuck. I’ll guide you through short sets of bilateral stimulation (using your eyes, sounds, or tapping), while your brain begins to naturally process the material.
You’re always in control. You don’t have to “relive” anything. You simply allow your brain to do what it’s designed to do — heal.
EMDR can help with:
Childhood trauma or emotional neglect
Anxiety and panic
Relationship patterns that feel stuck or confusing
PTSD and complex trauma
Low self-worth or inner criticism
Grief, loss, or major life transitions
If you’ve ever thought, “I know this shouldn’t bother me anymore… but it still does,” EMDR might be the next step.
Healing is possible.
