Mind-Body Connection

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to healing that recognizes a fundamental truth: trauma, stress, and emotional pain don't just live in your thoughts. They live in your body. The tightness in your chest. The knot in your stomach. The tension in your shoulders that never fully releases. The way you hold your breath when you feel triggered. These aren't random — they're your body's way of holding experiences that were never fully processed.

Traditional talk therapy works primarily through cognition — understanding your patterns, reframing thoughts, building insight. Somatic therapy adds a crucial layer by working directly with the body's sensations, movements, and nervous system responses. This is important because many of our most entrenched patterns are stored below the level of conscious thought. You can understand your pattern perfectly and still be unable to change it, because the body hasn't gotten the message yet.

At Soulstice Miami, we integrate somatic approaches throughout our work. This might look like noticing where tension shows up in your body during a difficult conversation, using breath and movement to discharge trapped survival energy, tracking your nervous system responses in real time, or helping you develop a felt sense of safety that goes beyond cognitive understanding.

Somatic therapy is particularly powerful when combined with EMDR, which also works at the level of the nervous system. Together, these approaches create lasting change because they address not just what you think about your experiences, but how your body holds them.

What It Helps

When Somatic Therapy Is Especially Helpful

Trauma that lives in the body as chronic tension, pain, or hypervigilance

Anxiety that shows up physically: racing heart, tight chest, stomach knots

Dissociation or feeling disconnected from your body and emotions

Emotional reactions that feel overwhelming or hard to regulate

Stress that doesn't respond to cognitive strategies alone

A general sense of not feeling safe or at home in your own body

Your body is not the enemy of healing. It's the doorway to it.

In Session

What Somatic Therapy Looks Like

Somatic therapy at Soulstice Miami doesn't look like a yoga class or massage session. It's integrated into the therapeutic conversation. We might pause mid-discussion to notice what's happening in your body. We'll track sensations as they arise and explore what they're connected to. We might use grounding techniques, breath work, or gentle movement to help your nervous system shift states.

Over time, you develop a deeper relationship with your body — learning to read its signals, trust its wisdom, and use it as a resource for regulation rather than experiencing it as a source of distress. This is how healing becomes embodied, not just understood.

Your body has been carrying the weight of your experiences. Somatic therapy can help it finally let go. In-person in Miami Beach and virtual throughout Florida.
